Childers - A heritage town

Visitors wishing to take in the delights of Fraser Island, The Great Barrier Reef or the Wide Bay Hinterland should consider making Childers their stop-over point.

Childers is central to every attraction the Wide Bay has to offer.  The picturesque town of Childers is situated on the Bruce Highway only four hours drive north of Brisbane.  The countryside around Childers is magnificent with its sweeping fields of the lush green sugar  cane, subtropical fruit and vegetable crops set amidst the hills of rich volcanic loam.

Childers is only about a half hour drive from Bundaberg to the north and Maryborough and Hervery Bay to the south.  The inland towns of Biggenden and Gayndah also lie within similar destination times.  More and more tourists are finding Childers the ideal base point for their forays throughout the Wide Bay area.

Woodgate Beach

Woodgate Beach is just 25kms east of Childers. This magnificent white sandy beach some 16kms long, backs onto the Burrum Coast National Park - Woodgate section - a four wheel driving and camping paradise.

The park is home to kangaroos and wallabies that frequent residential lawns and bowling greens while the park also has spectacular springtime wildflower displays.

The area 's moderate surf and clean environment is a favourite with families.  Interesting tours of the region and fishing charters service the area for those who want to do more than just relax.

Follow the esplanade - north leads to Theodolite Creek and south leads to Walker's Point on the Burrum river. A boat ramp, toilet and picnic facilities are available at these popular fishing pots. Enjoy an eco tourism experience.

Mon Repos Turtle Rookery

Mon Repos is Australia’s best known and most accessible loggerhead turtle rookery. Between Mid-November and the end of March, giant sea turtles make their way up the beach to lay their eggs and baby "hatchlings", under the cover of darkness, emerge and make their way back down to the sea. Inside the turtle centre, films and displays show the life cycle and dangers facing these magnificent creatures and rangers take visitors onto the beach to witness laying and hatching.

Whale Watching

Whale watching season is from beginning of August until end of October. The warm calm waters of Hervey Bay's "Platypus Bay" invite the humpback whales for a brief rest on their migratory path each year between July and November. This rest period gives the calves time to develop a protective layer of blubber so they can follow their mothers through the South Pacific and Southern Oceans to the cold Antarctic waters.
